Cristen grew up in the country just outside of Andalusia, Alabama, and went on to study at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. Cristen has spent the last seven years in Salt Lake City, Utah where she practiced residential design at a leading yet small interior design firm and then transitioned to commercial at the largest architecture firm in the territory where she completed projects in small tenant improvements, multi-family housing, hospitality, and commercial. When she isn’t practicing design, you would most likely find her somewhere in nature, on a road trip “picking” antiques and exploring new towns, photographing something unique, or painting at home.
I love being an Interior Designer because of the positive impact I can have on people’s lives. I approach the design process comprehensively – how will the end user function, does it enhance their lives, is it beautiful and healthy? The design process can be intimidating and stressful for clients and I love taking the burden off someone and saying we as a team can take this on and then delivering on that promise… doesn’t get better than that. I could go on and on… it’s incredibly fulfilling, I get to wear many hats.
Ever since I was a little girl, I have had a rich interest in the history of the Arts and as a designer, I draw most of my design style from the past while being attuned to contemporary application. While I love a traditional space, I also lean towards some unorthodox applications such as unexpected color combinations, interesting furniture juxtapositions, or a unique piece of art. Bring on the quirkiness.
I’m a collector and love items that will stay around for as long as I will and beyond. Whether they are new, handmade by a local craftsman, or antique, I appreciate quality and character, thoughtful and creative material usage, etc. I am drawn to items that are interesting, create a sense of peace or nourish the soul. With that being said and being the nature lover that I am, a couple of current dream pieces are the 1900 French bronze stag that belongs in mine or someone’s garden ASAP and the 1860 bronze dog sculpture we have at the shop.
