What was the inspiration behind these pieces?
The Tapisserie IV collection was inspired by old-world verdue tapestries that display lush greenery and foliage. All of my work is inspired by 18th century landscape artists and this particular series was fun to study the composition of trees and leaf shapes known to be on tapestries. “IV” is roman numerals for “4” and a nod to the 4th trimester of pregnancy, which is when these works were painted.
How do you get past creative blocks and keep things fresh?
I take long breaks. Every time I run into creative blocks I try to lean into that and give myself real time off. Any time I try to force work and push through in those seasons I am never happy with what I create. It’s important for me that the product I’m selling is something that can’t be forced or inauthentic. I like to believe the people that have been collecting my art over the years value and cherish the work that comes out when it’s ready to come out. I put deep thought into what I’m painting and how it will resonate with those who choose to hang it in their homes. All of my series are inspired by my life and lived experiences – I can’t have one without the other. I have to pause and take time away from my studio to refresh my mind and come back to my chair bursting with inspiration.

How do you incorporate your love for your family into your work?
Without the birth of our boys, I’m not sure I would have ever started painting again. Somewhere along the way the world made me believe that being an artist wasn’t enough and I let go of that dream when I was young. But when Camp and Wells were born, I felt like myself for the first time in a decade – all I wanted to do was paint. I was completely unrestrained and I fell hopelessly in love with these two boys while falling back in love with myself. My boys’ birth cascaded my own rebirth. Motherhood had a way of bringing immense magic and divine purpose to my life, and these two boys influence me daily to be my most authentic self – which is in my studio with a brush in hand.
What was the post-partum creative process like?
As a small business owner, my husband and I were filling orders our first night home from the hospital! The people who collect my work have been so kind and gracious to me during this period and have given me plenty of time to get orders to them but it’s always important to me to ship quickly. I didn’t think I’d be painting original work during the postpartum period but Townes brought so much creative inspiration with his arrival and I couldn’t wait to get started.
